The scattering of light on small particles are normally divided between two explanations: Rayleigh Scattering, named after Lord Rayleigh and Mie Scattering, named after Gustav Mie. For these small particles the scattering can be predicted by the Rayleigh theory. Aerosols, small particles suspended in air with a lifetime of at least minutes, are either emitted as primary aerosols (dust or particle emissions of diesel cars) or formed by the conversion of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ammonia and organic . (1) Waves from light first scattered by a particle and then reflected by the mirror before entering the eye. The colours come from interference between two sets of waves. For particles that are smaller than one-tenth the wavelength of the incident light Rayleigh scattering is observed. If the wavelength of the incoming light and the size of the particle are about the same, Mie scattering occurs and some of the light will be scattered back in the direction from which the light came (back scattering) (see Figure 3). The essentialas are small particles near a reflective surface. Scattering, Absorption, and Emission of Light by Small Particles book download. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) exploits the link between hydrodynamic particle size and diffusion rate, calculated from measurements of time-dependent light fluctuations. Static light scattering (SLS) involves the Because of this DLS is a powerful technique for detecting the presence of very small numbers of relatively large particles, which can give an early indication of stability issues during protein storage or during a treatment process.
